Why there’s nothing new about ageism and age discrimination
2+ mon, 2+ week ago (417+ words) How frustrating! For over 50 years, we have been talking about the same thing " ageism in the workplace and older worker engagement. Before we get to your question, here is a bit of historical context." The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) states, "It isunlawfultodiscriminateagainst any individual age 40 or older because of their age with respect to " recruitment, hiring, firing, promotion, layoff, compensation, benefits, job assignments and training." In the 1980s, there were multiple hearings to the Senate Special Commission on Aging focusing on a national older worker policy, the federal role in promoting work opportunities, the cost of older workers and private sector examples. So this is not a new topic for our nation and society. We've been at it a long time. Here are a few facts, courtesy of AARP, to bring us up to date: Now to unconscious…...

6+ mon, 1+ week ago (425+ words) Q: Richard Tossetti of Temecula said his REAL ID driver's license will expire soon and he is in the process of renewing it. Letter: South Coast AQMD is committed to practical, innovative solutions
7+ mon, 1+ week ago (172+ words) We recognize cost concerns and have ensured consumer choice remains. Contrary to claims, natural gas furnaces and water heaters are not being banned. Existing units can still be used, and gas replacements remain while zero-emission models become more common. These rules have been in development for over two years with extensive public input, including 100+ meetings and 30+ presentations to local governments and community organizations. We recognize cost concerns and have ensured consumer choice remains. Zero-emission appliances, already making up nearly 25% of furnace sales in California, offer long-term savings through efficiency. The proposed rules will cut six tons per day of smog-forming emissions, reducing asthma attacks, hospital visits, and healthcare costs. Electrification is a proven, growing solution and California's clean energy advancements will support future demand. Rather than resisting progress, we should focus on affordability and infrastructure improvements. South Coast AQMD remains…...

Roki Sasaki sweepstakes begin as Japanese pitcher’s recruiting process opens
11+ mon, 2+ week ago (679+ words) DALLAS " Roki Sasaki is about to enter into a unique process, following a path last taken by Shohei Ohtani. When Ohtani left Japan in 2017, just about every team in baseball was in the running for his services. He picked the Angels, and six years later wound up signing for $700 million with the Dodgers. Now, many assume Sasaki is going to end up as Ohtani's teammate with the Dodgers. His agent, Joel Wolfe, spoke to a throng of reporters Tuesday at MLB's winter meetings. It was the first day of the 45-day window that opened when Sasaki was posted by the Chiba Lotte Marines. Sasaki throws a 102-mph fastball. Assembly Bill 84 is a direct threat to students with disabilities
6+ mon, 1+ week ago (450+ words) Assembly Bill 84 (AB 84) is being framed as a charter school reform bill, but its implications for students with disabilities are dangerously overlooked. This bill targets non-classroom-based (NCB) public charter schools'schools like ours that provide flexible, personalized learning models'and proposes to slash their funding by up to 30%. At Sky Mountain Charter School, where 11% of our 2,500 students receive special education services, we rely heavily on general education funds to ensure our students get what they need and are legally entitled to. AB 84 would cut those general funds by 30%. That's not a minor adjustment'it's a direct blow to the heart of our ability to serve students with disabilities. Let's be clear: this is not just a matter of budget spreadsheets or policy theory. It's about real kids'students who come to us because their needs were not being met in traditional classroom-based schools. These…...
